The Lyon Opera Orchestra

The Orchestra, one of the moving forces of the opera, strengthens its worldwide reputation. Since its creation in 1983, several music directors have led it: John Eliot Gardiner first, then Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, Iván Fischer, Kazushi Ono, and since 2017, Daniele Rustioni who was appointed Music Director by Richard Brunel in 2022. The Orchestra performs on the world’s greatest stages, including in Japan, Oman and major opera festivals such as Edinburgh, Aix-en-Provence…
It has also taken part in more than 70 recordings and videos. It will celebrate its 40th birthday this year.

2023, for the Opéra de Lyon, marks the beginning of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of its Orchestra; a wonderful opportunity to retrace this story, over the coming months, with the musical directors who have marked it: Daniele Rustioni and his predecessors – Kent Nagano, Kazushi Ono. Each brought to the Orchestra a particular repertoire and colors: from Russian music to 21st century music, from 18th century music to romantic and modern French music.

For the accomplishment of this 40-year cycle, we hope to find for the following seasons John Eliot Gardiner, the first musical director of the Orchestra, Iván Fischer and Louis Langrée.

On the occasion of this anniversary, find three of the great conductors who have made and are making the history of the Orchestra de l'Opéra de Lyon.
